On This Day Dent Oliver was born (13 April 1918) in Crook Co Durham.
One of the all time greats of Belle Vue. Dent rode for the Aces in 1946-1950, 1952, 1965.
He retired from racing in 1965.
In 1967 he took over has the Aces team manager, and stayed there till 1973.
He became our most successful manager, winning three consecutive league titles in 1970, 1971 and 1972.
Top of the averages on those titles was a certain Mr Ivan Mauger.
Dent masterminded the Monday training sessions at Hyde Road for the up and coming riders.
In 1973 he suffered a massive heart attack which he never recovered from and sadly died on the 15th December aged 55.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ On This Day (13 April 2020) should have been the traditional Easter fixtures, against the Wolverhampton Wolves.

Keep it going Valiantvue82, I'm enjoying all these items you are posting. By the way no programme mistakes!! not like myself. Thanks! Will do my best, still happily looking through the collection. Loved my programmes and collecting even from a very young age. Would be gutted if i ever made mistakes when filling them in. A good programme collection is a thing of beauty and a great memory jogger of where we were on certain days and times in our lives.

On this day, 15th April, 1988 the Aces took on Sheffield at Kirky Lane in the Frank Varey Northern Trophy. The visitors ran out winners by 50-40. It was clearly an evening for American talent to shine through with Mike Faria toping the score charts for the Aces with 16+1 from 6 riders, and Shawn and Kelly Moran collecting 15 (max), and 13+1 respectively for the Tigers. Roland Danno was missing for the Aces and replaced at No.4 by David Blackburn who scored 3+1 from 3 rides. For those of you with a programme of this meeting, check out the excellent art work of Kelly Moran on page 5, by Jeff Baker. Attachments:

On this day, 16th April, 1979 Belle Vue beat Halifax 40-37 at Hyde Road on the Frank Varey Northern Trophy. Heats 4 to 8 inclusive saw the visitors gain 5 successive 2-4 scores giving the Dukes a 21-27 advantage after heat 8. The Aces pulled most of the deficit back in heat 9 with a 5-0 result thanks to engine failures and falls from the Dukes. A couple of 3-3's followed before Peter Collins and Emil Sova delivered a 5-1 in heat 12 to give the Aces a 3-point advantage going into the final heat, where Chris Morton and Les Collins produced a 3-3 to keep the points advantage and seal the victory in the last heat. Aces scorers were; Peter Collins 11, Arnie Haley 1, Chris Morton 13, Emil Sova 2+1, Les Collins 7+1, Keith Bloxham 1, Rob Maxfield 5. More to come tomorrow, including some Colts nostalgia. Enjoy your day folks. Stay Home. Stay Safe.

Valiantvue82 Hope you don,t mind me jumping in.
My Uncle Alan ( who was riding for Nelson and owned a Motorcycle shop in Eccles ) had rung my Mum & Dads house on the Thursday 15 Apr and asked if I want to go to Rochdale with him on Fri Nite , if so get yourself down to my grandparents house he said , So on the Fri afternoon I left School in Culcheth Warrington and biked down to the East Lancs Rd ( Greyhound Pub ) Junction then up the East Lancs Rd to were the Bridgewater canal was, down the Tow Path to Monton Eccles, then down to my grandparents house and waited for Alan to come home from the shop, bit of a surprise to see my grandparents were not getting ready to go but never mind they always went to see him when it was near , Alan arrives and rushes in goes for a shower and I just glance out of the windows of their house towards the drive and see his car BUT NO Speedway BIKE to be seen . I have to say little bit disappointed but going to a speedway match so what the hell. I will always remember asking Alan why are we going to Rochdale if your not riding his answer was simple Peter Collins is having his first match tonite and I want to see him ride , This lad is going to set the speedway world on fire he said and I’d put money on him being World Champion within the next 5 yrs. Think he scored 11 pts that nite . It won,t let me add the photo of the cover of the programme , but read "ROUND The Raceway" Rochdale v Crewe 16 Apr 1971

I've just read on the official Aces website that it's two years today since Ivan Mauger died. How time flies. RIP Ivan.

I've just read on the official Aces website that it's two years today since Ivan Mauger died. How time flies. RIP Ivan. Always remember getting Bruce Penhall's autograph and Ivan Mauger's autograph on the same night at Coventry back in the early 80's. It was choas and a free for all getting Bruce's, yet Ivan insisted on an orderly queue to line up for his! Such respect. Such a nice guy when signing the autograph book too, spoke well and personally to every single fan. I was so nervous!

On this day, 17th April, 1987 Aces beat Bradford 51-27 in a League Cup encounter at Hyde Road. An opening race 3-3 followed by two Aces 5-1's saw an 8-point led after just 3 heats. The Dukes never recovered, winning only three heats all night. Even the use of Neil Evitts and Lance King as tactical substitutes to heats 6 and 8 had no impact with these races ending in a 2-4 and 4-2. Morton (captain) led the team in style with a 4-ride maximum, with close season new recruit Paul Thorp enjoying his time at reserve with a 5-ride paid maximum. Aces scorers were; Ravn 10, McKinna 1, Smith 8+1, Blackbird 4+2, Morton 12 (max), Hornby 3+2, Thorp 13+2 (paid max). Lance King was the visitors only rider to record any heat wins, scoring 13 from 5 rides. The Colts were held to a closer affair for the second half fixture, drawing 21-21 with Bradford Tudors. The Colts team lower order feature Glenn Hornby at No.4 and Paul Smith at No.5, both of whom went on to wear the colours of the Aces. Glenn scored 8 from 3 rides, whilst Paul scored 2+2 from 2 rides. There was only ever a maximum of two points between the sides in a close fought encounter. Attachments:

My experience of Ivan's generosity was after a Polish friend had sent a gift to my wife and I via Pawel Waloszek saying that he would pass it on to us at Wembley Stadium. Wondering how we could contact Pawel, we saw Ivan outside the stadium and explained our problem to him. Without hesitation he took me into the dressing rooms and introduced me to Pawel. A great gesture from a great man.

Also shows what good riders PC and Mort were being able to score so highly on a small technical track when classed as big track specialist’s.
