On This Day (3 May 1949 ) Alan Wilkinson was born in Penrith Cumbria.
Rode for the Aces between 1971-1978
His career was brought to a sudden halt on July 1 1978, when after what looked an innocuous crash at Hyde Road, his life would change forever. The accident resulted in Alan, aged 29, receiving a spinal neck injury and needing a wheelchair for the rest of his life. His career cut drastically short.
Truly one of our greatest characters who ever rode for the Belle Vue Aces.

Truly one of our greatest characters who ever rode for the Belle Vue Aces. I was too young to see Alan ride but from what I read he was a great rider and character. I’ve got Alan’s book”from 4 wheels to 2” and it’s a great read.

What I’ve noticed with these look backs over the years is how consistent Peter Collins was,the mark of a true master..!!

Milton Keynes used to have a lot of Oxford riders race for them in the 80’s,Oxford loaned them out to gain experience.

On this day, 8th May, 1968 the Second Division was launched.
Belle Vue entered a team, although not under the usual name of the Aces or the Colts (at least to start with). The official programme for their opening fixture against the Canterbury Crusaders shows Belle Vue named as the Belle Vue ‘Babes’!. Team Manager Dent Oliver ran a series of training schools to unearth new talent and wanted to call the team ‘Babes’ but wasn’t allowed and was overruled by the authorities who insisted the team couldn’t carry the nickname of ‘Babes’. However, the first programme and team sheets had already been printed and so they were initially known as the ‘Babes’.
The return fixture at Canterbury on 18th May also had them printed and listed as the ‘Babes’. Thereafter, the team changed its nickname and were then officially known as the ‘Colts’. The ‘Babes’ won their opening fixture on 8th May by 38-16.
The first ever ‘Babes’ team was listed as; Taffy Owen, Les Eyre, John Woodcock, Brian Bentley, Chris Bailey, David Brockbank, and Ken Moss.
