Thanks for these posts speedwayred, no doubt they will bring back memories to some fans. I remember seeing a young Chris Pusey during his first season in the Aces team.

On this day Frank Varey was born (31 March 1908) in Eldwick Yorks.
He was a legend at Belle Vue between the years of 1930-1939. (Riding capacity)
Top speedway riders in the 1930s were making £100 a week, while soccer stars were making a few pounds. (not like these days)
Frank was made captain in 1931. He had the reputation of being a very hard rider, far worse than the present day riders like Nicki Pedersen.
After his retirement from riding in 1945, he began promoting speedway for several clubs.
He returned briefly to Belle Vue as Team Manager in 1974
He died in 1988 aged 79

On this day, 6th April, 1990 the Aces were involved in a Inter-League 4 Team Tournament at Kirkmanshulme Lane. Long Eaton - 15 Aces 'A - 24 (Shawn Moran 11, Scott Smith 0, Bobby Ott 3, Kelly Moran 9, Richard Smith 1) Middlesbrough - 31 Aces 'B - 37 (Peter Ravn 12, Joe Screen 9, Chris Morton 11, Mike Lewthwaite 3, Richard Musson 2) Copy of the race card attached as an image. For any stato's out there the inside back two pages of this programme featured a table of Aces riders in the 80s and their full stats of matches, rides, points, bonus points, average, full and paid maximums. We all had our favourites and hero's of this era, so interesting to see how our favourites actually performed in comparison to our memories. Attachments:

On this day, 7th April, 1984 Belle Vue beat Coventry 54-24 at Hyde Road. Tommy Knudsen was missing for the Bees due to injury and was replaced at No.1 by guest Joe Owen who scored 2 points, arguably a good few less than TK would of scored. Mark Courtney and Chris Morton helped themselves to 12 point maximums, and PC to a 11+1 paid maximum. The only real resistance from the Bees came from a youthful John Jorgensen at No.7 with 7 points from his 4 rides. 1984 was my favourite all-time Aces team, with home wins a plentiful and often with some huge scores. Also the programme front cover from this season was my favourite design too. Meanwhile on this day, 7th April, 1980 I was off to Station Road, Long Eaton to witness Nottingham Outlaws beat Stoke Potters by 42-36 in the National League Trent Trophy. Enjoy your day. On this day, 8th April, 1988 the Aces hosted Wolves at Kirky Lane beating them 51-39. Ravn 10+2, Smith 11+2, Morton 9, Danno 3, Thorp 8+1, Faria 7, and Hornby 3+1. Wolves were always adrift in the meeting with only Ermolenko 11+2, and Eriksen 11 offering any resistance to the Aces.
Trivia note: given that the meeting with Bradford on 01.04.1988 was rained off after two heats, this meeting on the 8th v Wolves became the first full meeting held at Kirky Lane since its re-opening after the closure of Hyde Road.Page 12 of the programme offered a listing of '88 British League team strengths, with clearly no such 1 rider 8pt ruling! Cradley Heath listed Gundersen, Pedersen, and Cross; Oxford listed Nielsen, Wigg, Cox, and Dugard; and Kings Lynn listed Petersen, King, Davis, and Knight. Page 5 and 15 of the programme offered the excellent cartoon artwork from Jeff Baker, with action drawings of Ermolenko and Morton respectively. Enjoy your day folks. Remember - Stay Home, Stay Safe. Keep em coming chaps..!! Am loving this Aces Nostalgia. Will do my best. At least all this time at home gives me chance to look through the old collection of programmes and memorabilia and waste a few hours in nostaglia. Loads more to come, just so long as the good lady wife doesn't give me too much DIY to do!

I remember both Louis and Peter Carr at Ellesmere Port and particularly their grandfather who was a real character. Once on an overnight stay in Canterbury before going on to Eastbourne the following day, Peter couldn't be found and his grandfather said, "He probably found a lass and is getting his end away and I'll tell you what, if I were a bit younger I'd be theer with him."

Something a bit different today, by looking at an individual rider rather than a BV team event.
On this day, 11th April, 1987 Stoke hosted the British Quarter Final at Loomer Road with young Aces reserve Glenn Hornby representing the Aces. Unfortunately, Glenn didn’t qualify from the meeting collecting just 1 point from 5 rides when he headed Steve Bishop of Arena Essex in heat 6.
Future Aces rider Daz Sumner also featured collecting 10 points from 5 rides to finish a respectable 4th place. Unfortunately, only 3 qualifiers went through to the next round.
Enjoy your day folks.
Back to normal tomorrow with a double Aces piece.
Stay home. Stay safe.

On this day, 12th April 1986 Belle Vue drew 39-39 at home to Swindon. Morton 12 (max), McKinna 5, Smith 4, Blackbird 6, Collins 6+1, Ayres 2+1, Eccles 4+1. Swindon’s scorecard was topped by Alan Grahame with 12+1 from 5 rides. Aces held a narrow lead throughout the meeting until heat 15 when an away 5-1 from Alan Grahame and Phil Crump snatched a point for the visitors. Strange but true, on this day the following year (1987) Aces again hosted Swindon at Hyde Road. Only 4 of the Aces team remained with Collins, Ayres and Eccles from the Class of ’86 being replaced by Ravn, Hornby and Thorp for the ‘87 fixture. Aces won the meeting 45-33 with the scorers; Ravn 10+1, McKinna 2+1, Smith 1, Blackbird 9+1, Morton 8+3, Hornby 2, and Thorp 13. If anyone happens to have details of the second half results/scorecards for either of these ’86 or ’87 Colts v Junior Robins/Sprockets fixtures I’d be happy to receive a copy! Meanwhile on this day in 1981, I was at Monmore Green to watch the unusual challenge fixture of Wolves v Italy. Wolves winning 52-25. Attachments:

On this day, 13th April, 1990 Aces were beaten 42-48 at home by Wolves. Luckily for the Aces, Sam Ermolenko was back riding in America and so unable to compete meaning that John Jorgensen guested for the Wolves scoring 6+1 from 4 rides, otherwise with Sam the score could have been even worse for the Aces. To make the night worse Peter Ravn fell in heat 4 and took no further part in the meeting. Aces scorers were; S Moran 9, Morton 6+3, Ravn 0, K Moran 14, Screen 7+1, Lewthwaite 2, Ott 4+1. Request: I don’t have heat details for the second half Colts v Cubs fixture, so if anyone has these please feel free to send me a private message or add a reply with the details to this thread (worth a try!). Ex-Aces trivia. Also on this day, 1991, I was at Loomer Road to see Stoke Potters beat Glasgow Tigers, in a Gold Cup (Northern Section) fixture by 49-40. Former Ace’ Kenny McKinna rode for the Tigers scoring 6 points from 4 rides. Attachments:
